In The Biological Shell, Andrea Costa explores what the emergence of superintelligence could mean for humanity – not simply as a technological development, but as a possible turning point in the history of intelligence.
We spoke with the author about the assumptions behind today’s AI debate, the future of human intelligence, and the questions that arise when we look beyond technology itself.
1. What led you to write The Biological Shell?
I kept noticing a gap. The public conversation about AI moves from one headline to the next – a new model, a new benchmark, a new warning – but rarely steps back to ask what kind of event this might represent in the history of intelligence. I wanted to explore that question and build a framework for thinking about what comes next.
2. We often talk about artificial intelligence in terms of risk. You approach the question from a somewhat different perspective. Why?
Risk framing tends to produce two dead ends: paralysis or denial. I wanted to ask a more useful question: what determines whether the transition goes well or badly, and how much of that is within our control?
3. What do you think we misunderstand most about the possibility of superintelligence?
Two things, mainly. First, we imagine it as an event – a machine that “wakes up” – when it may really be a threshold that passes without any dramatic marker at all. Second, we ask almost exclusively whether it will be friendly or hostile, which imports a human psychology that may not apply to a system born from a completely different kind of optimization. The more useful question isn’t “what will it feel toward us,” but “what condition will it find us in when it arrives” – because that, unlike its intentions, we can actually influence.
4. Your book connects artificial intelligence with much broader questions about intelligence and evolution. Why was that connection important to you?
Because AI discourse usually stays at the scale of jobs, policy, and quarterly earnings, and that scale can hide a much larger question: what does it mean when intelligence becomes capable of creating new forms of intelligence? Once you take that possibility seriously, the conversation stops being just about technology and starts being about our place in a much longer story.
5. How much of the future described in the book is a prediction, and how much is a conceptual possibility?
Almost none of it is prediction, and I try to make that distinction explicit. The book is less interested in forecasting a particular future than in exploring the conditions that could make different futures possible.
6. You also look at what might happen to humanity if it is no longer the most advanced intelligence on Earth. Is this necessarily a negative scenario?
No. Being surpassed isn’t necessarily the same as being erased. We tend to assume that if another intelligence becomes more capable than us, our role must disappear with it. I wanted to question that assumption and ask whether there are other ways to understand what it means for humanity to be surpassed.
7. The book eventually moves from questions about AI toward much larger questions about civilization and the universe. What prompted that broader perspective?
It’s really just following the logic of the premise. If a created intelligence could inherit the ability to act on physical reality at real scale, the natural next questions aren’t about jobs or markets. They’re about matter, energy, time, and what such an intelligence would actually do with a universe once it could reach one. I didn’t set out to write about cosmology. The argument pulled me there, chapter by chapter, the same way it might pull any reader who keeps asking “and then what?”
8. You devote considerable space to objections to your own argument. Why was it important to include them?
Because a model that crosses geopolitics, physics, and the far future doesn’t deserve automatic trust. It deserves scrutiny. I wanted the book to apply that scrutiny to itself rather than simply ask the reader to accept its premises.
9. What do you hope readers will question after finishing the book?
I’d like them to stop asking only “Will AI replace us?” and start asking “What, of what we call human, is actually worth carrying forward?” and “Am I doing anything today that makes that more likely?” The book isn’t a warning, and it isn’t a comfort. It’s an invitation to treat this as something we’re already building, one choice at a time, rather than a verdict that will simply arrive one day and be read out to us.
